I formed Carrillion with Jason (Jase the Bass) King on bass guitar in May 1983 for a school concert in my home town of Peterborough. But by 1984 Jason was gone and with him any real chance of the music being something like synth-pop.

This second compilation contains the following three cassette albums I produced following the split: "Pictorial Action", "Futura" and "Electrick".

Apart from the obvious sonic absence of the bass guitar, the most obvious musical change I think is the lack of a driving back beat. Swirling arpeggios and spaces full of tape hiss predominate. I think probably some of this was influenced by Brian Eno; though I never owned any of his work at least one Sixth Form friend played me something at some point so I was at least aware of ‘Ambient’ as a genre.

But perhaps I am being unfair to myself - I probably wanted to create synth-pop but had neither the sense of rhythm or the right musical sensibilities. The tape hiss and distortion is not there by choice but by the nature of my limited equipment. And so the music becomes very much an artefact of the environment in which it was recorded. Particularly so in the case of ‘Queensgate’ which features some field recordings done in the eponymous shopping centre which had opened the year before.

There are a couple of ‘bonus’ tracks on this compilation which I haven’t previously made available. I came across them when digitizing my old compact cassettes.

Anyway, the whole forms some kind of sonic memory for me and I hope it is able to conjure up something in the mind of the listener.

Predominantly led by a borrowed Roland Juno 6 augmented with various other (much cheaper) keyboards and effects and all recorded on a Tascam 244 portastudio.

Inspiration came from unrequited love, naïve political views and mis-interpreted cultural signposts... the usual fare for teenage artistic ventures I s'pose.
